Ethics Moment

December 17, 2010

You work in the communications department of a manufacturing company. Your department uses a local public relations firm and you oversee the work assigned to the firm. Over the last year, you have developed good relationships with the agency members assigned to your account. You are an avid golfer. One of the firm’s members offers you the opportunity to golf at an exclusive golf course.

How can you ethically accept the offer?

Guidance — Professional Standard 11 Conflicts of Interest

The presence or absence of conflicts of interest can only be determined by all parties affected. You need to check your company’s ethics policy and notify your supervisor of the offer, and the firm member needs to notify his/her supervisor. The opportunity to have access to the golf course is a gift; you should pay for the cost of a round of golf.

Ethics Moment – PowerPoint Presentations

December 5, 2010

Your role in developing a presentation is the PowerPoint. You use your LinkedIn network to ask people for examples of PowerPoint presentations. You get five examples and there are five slides with information from five different sources that you’d like to include in your presentation.

How can you use these slides in your PowerPoint?

Guidance — Disclosure of Information

Obtain permission from the sources of the slides to use the slides and note the sources on your PowerPoint presentation.
